This is an academic project by 2nd year students at the Architecture School of Universidad de Santiago of Chile. It begins with the observation and analysis of a structure found in nature. The students try to find the logic and concepts in nature structures behavior, defining the elements that compose it and how they interact. After this, they have to design a structure that reflects the previous concepts, covering a distance of 50 cm. They build models with wooden sticks of 1×2 mm, that are later subjected to 2-3 load tests. After each test, the students evaluate their designs in order to improve their resistance.
The objective of this work is to help students understand structural behavior and show them how this can enhance their designs. The results obtained so far show that students have a better understanding of how structures work and how forces are distributed in them.
